How to Prevent Damage When Straightening Hair

by Sara

When using a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron; you are exposing your hair to a heat source that is damaging to your hair.
Straightening your hair is probably one of the more harsh methods of heat exposure since generally you blowdry your hair first, followed by exposing your hair to the secondary direct heat source of the actual flat iron.

This reason doesn’t have to be a means to discourage one from straightening the hair. By using a good hair flat iron such as CHI ceramic flat irons and introducing thermal protectant hair care products, one can reduce the amount of hair exposure and damage.

Should You straighten your hair every day?

No. Do not straighten your hair every day. I know this seems so logical, that’s because it is! Give your hair a break. It’s ok! Just as it is a good idea to switch up your hair products that are used daily in your hair to prevent product buildup, so is it also a great idea to give your hair a break from the heat exposure elements.

If you simply cannot leave the house with wet or air dried hair, try using a diffuser to illuminate direct heat exposure.

I like my irons hot

Don’t automatically set your iron to the hottest setting. The highest setting doesn’t translate to the best results. Set your iron on the lowest setting and test out the results. If you find you are not getting what you desire then increase the heat by small increments. Doing this little trick can reduce your hair damage significantly.

Use a thermal protecting styling products

By using a good thermal styling hair product in your hair, you would be doing your hair a great favor. These work by spraying or applying to the hair prior to using the heat on your hair. Not only are you protecting it from intense heat by adding vitamins back onto your hair but many products have additional benefits such as added shine and smoother results.

Fast or slow?

When gliding the iron through your hair, do not take your time and stop for a few. Prolonged heat exposure encourages damage to your hair. Glide the iron quickly through your hair while avoiding pulling on the hair too tightly. These tricks really are key preventing hair damage from flat irons.

Deep conditioning

It’s a good idea to deep condition your hair 1-2 times a week. There are some fabulous deep conditioning hair masques available on the market that will work wonders for over-worked hair.
