Over the lifetime of my hair, I have had my hair professionally relaxed (chemically straightened) three times. I have had my hair chemically straightened twice in the past 6 months and done at the same salon, Amentities Day Spa & Salon done by Jennifer Castillo. These last two times I have had my hair relaxed has been with Aveda products and honestly I must say that Aveda products are already superior as fair has hair color and everyday products go and I am even more convinced that their permanent hair straightening products are top notch because they never leave my hair dry or damaged.
I think what makes many people hesitant about having their hair permanently straightened is first of all, the price. It can be very expensive because it does take quite a bit of time to do. It’s taken about 3 hours on average for my straightening appointments and my hair is medium-long in length.
The time consumption aside is people want to know if their hair is going to be bone straight afterwards, therefore worth the cost. I have pretty curly hair. This photo below are my before and after photos of having my hair permanently relaxed this past summer.

After a few months my hair was still relatively straight after blow drying. Just so you know, it was never bone straight after blow drying. It always had quite a bit of wave to it and especially back by the crown there was this funky session that would have half the section of hair curling up while the ends were relatively straight. If I wanted my hair to lay completely flat, I would have to use my trusty Sedu flat iron after a quick blow drying.
I just had my hair re-relaxed this week as a sort of maintenance just because it has been about 6 weeks since I last had it professionally straightened and even though it probably wasn’t necessary, it was desired because of the new growth that had come in that did not have the relaxer on it. By the way, my hair grew like crazy these past 6 months. It grew about 3 inches but I did have about an inch trimmed off after the treatment this week.
This is a photo taken just hours after my relaxing treatment this past week. I apologize it’s not the best photo taken and you can’t see the length all that great in it but you can see how smooth and healthy the hair still is after a 2nd Aveda relaxing treatment.

The back of my head continues to provide a section in which the hair is fighting to stay curly. After my relaxing treatment the stylist even commented how that section is extremely stubborn, so I will always have to go over my hair with a flat iron if I want to have my hair bone straight but having the hair permanently straightened is worth it because during the winter months (like now) I would never even bother with blow drying or straightening my hair because of all the moisture in there air plus we get a lot of rain here in the central valley of California during December through February. And as most of you know, moisture or rain for a natural curly haired gal is an arch enemy. But having it straightened permanently allows me to be able to blow dry my hair quickly and walk away with semi-straight hair and sometimes it will show just a bit of a body and wave which is not all that bad in my book. It sure beats having to air dry my hair in super cold weather in order to prevent frizz to my curls.
